Description:

Reissue, first published in book form in 1865. The work first appeared in the religious serial 'Good Works', Jan-Dec. 1864. The last of Gosse's marine natural history books with descriptive biographies of animals which may be seen month by month by a naturalist who spends a year at the shore. Illustrated by charming chromolithographed plates, from watercolour drawings by the author and printed by Leighton Bros.

Condition

Orig. dec. cloth, gilt, spine faded, elaborate gilt and black pictorial design to front cover, central gilt sea-shore scene with title above and author below, teg. Small label removed from front pastedown. Vg. From the library of Bernard Verdcourt (1925-2011), botanist and Honorary Research Fellow at the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew. He was also formerly associated with the East African Herbarium. Best-known for his studies of the East African flora, he also made extensive contributions relating to African terrestrial molluscs and entomology. With his book-plate loosely inserted.
