The Hymenoptera section (including Supplement by J. Sichel: Hymenoptera Fossoria et Mellifera), comprising Abt. I from Zoologischer Teil, Bd II of the scientific report of the circumnavigation of the Austrian Frigate Novara, 1857-1859, under the command of Commodore B. von Wüllerstorf-Urbair. The Novara Expedition of the SMS Novara was the first and only circumnavigation voyage by the Austrian Navy.
Rare with plates hand-coloured.
Condition
4to, finely bound in recent quarter morocco, teg, marbled boards. Plates in two states, coloured and uncoloured. Coloured plates with some foxing. Ownership stamp of 'Dr A[dolf] Nadig. Chur' to flyleaf. Nadig (1877-1960), was born in Munich, Germany, and later resident in Chur, Switzerland, where he was a prominent naturalist. Although without his ownership marks, this copy also, later, passed through the library of hymenopterist, Donald B. Baker.
