A second, loose half-title page is present, bearing a presentation inscription from the managing director of Country Life, Herbert Pratt, to Hugh Pollard: 'The base schemer of this volume hereby acknowledges indebtedness to one who rose to the occasion and has contributed not a little towards the success it has commanded. To Hugh Pollard from Herbert Pratt, July 1928'. Pollard has written below the inscription: 'The above defilement represents the taste of Herbert Pratt managing director of Country Life. He started as an office boy and still retains the happy knack of whistling at the wrong moment. I wrote this book, Southgate provided the pictures and I hope that the widow of Southgate will get some money out of it. I have had none'.
