A Selection of Collectable Natural History Books

Offered here is a selection of rare, antiquarian and modern natural history books.

Highlights include:

- First edition/first issue of Darwin's 'The Descent of Man and Selection in relation to Sex'(1871), where the word "evolution" occurs, for the first time in any of Darwin's works.

- The Butterfly Vivarium (1858), a very attractive book with hand-coloured plates, including the frontispiece depicting the "little crystal palace" for butterflies and other insects

- The Book-Hunter at Home (1922) by P.B.M. Allen - 1 of 50 copies signed by the author.

- John Curtis' British Entomology(1823-1840), considered by the great French naturalist Georges Cuvier (17691832) a paragon of perfection, is one of the most beautifully illustrated works on British insects, with exquisitely drawn plates with the figures of the rarer and more beautiful species being coloured, and in many instances included the plants upon which the specimens were found.

- 1813 edition of Gilbert White's 'The Natural History and Antiquities of Selborne', a book Colleridge described as sweet delightful.

- A handsome and rare complete run bound in 59 vols of the endlessly fascinating 'North Staffordshire Naturalists' Field Club Annual Report and Transactions/Journal'

- A fine copy in pristine dust-jacket of 'Wild & Garden Plants' (New Naturalist 80). Completely unfaded copies of this book are 'an absolute rarity if indeed exist at all'(Bernhard & Loe, 2015).
