Description:

Eighteenth thousand. Publisher's catalogue, dated July 1887, bound at rear. This issue not recorded in Freeman (Freeman, 46, 18th thousand calls for pp. xii, 615), however, the following Murray issue recorded by Freeman (49), dated 1889 (no thousand given), reverts to the earlier pagination of x, 519. Freeman notes 'reversion to older set of stereos.' The twentieth thousand, 1889 (Freeman 50) is again paginated xii, 615. It would appear that there may have been two issues in 1888, both given as eighteenth thousand, one from stereos of the earlier issues, and one with the text completely reset (which is also the text used in the twentieth thousand).

8vo, orig. cloth. Foxing to endpaper, flyleaf and titlepage and last few pages of publisher's catalogue to rear; occasional minor spotting elswhere. A very good copy. Small ownership label of Edwin Morris to front pastedown and with his small ink stamp foot of title page. This copy from the library of K.G.V. Smith (1929-2017), he notes the difference in pagination to that recorded by Freeman in pencil to the verso of front endpaper.
