Description:
First British edition. An account of the author's experiences at the Advance Base during the American Antarctic Expedition of 1933-34. Rear Admiral Richard Evelyn Byrd (1888-1957) was an American naval officer and explorer. On his second expedition to the Antarctic in 1934, Byrd spent five winter months alone operating a meteorological station, Advance Base. This feat of mental and physical endurance and hardship is described in detail in this autobiography.
An interesting copy, as the book is stamped 'No 11 War Office, 4 June 1942, Selection Board' to front board. The War Office Selection Boards, or WOSBs, were devised by British Army psychiatrists during World War II to select potential officers for the British Army. The section process included psychological tests. It seems likely that this work was used to inform this selection procedure.
