Frank Connock Publication No. 1. The portfolio consists of 25 loose zoological water-colour drawings by the German painter and apothecary, Hendrik Claudius or Heinrich Claudius (c.1655-1697) of South African natural history subjects, selected from a collection of over 400 drawings by the artist now housed in the Africana Museum, Johannesburg. Together with a booklet concerning the life of Claudius and descriptions of each of the 27 drawings. Claudius arrived in the Cape Colony from Batavia in 1682 and joined two important expeditions to Namaqualand.

Cloth portfolio. (355x250mm) No. 695 of 1,000 copies. Some light foxing, mostly to title page and endpapers of portfolio.
