Description:

Jacob Christian Schäffer (1718-1790), was the first naturalist to appreciate the anatomical complexity of the microscopic crustacean, Daphnia. In this work he revealed both the structure and function of this microscopic creature. A pioneer of the comparative method of natural history study. Schäffer was unaware of the existence of male Daphnia and therefore concluded that Daphnia were hermaphrodites.
