Description:

First edition. Originally published in 26 parts, each part consisting of 6 plates and corresponding text. Parts 1-24 (vols 1 + 2) comprise the first series. The author states in the preface that the twenty-fifth number 'will commence the second series of the Entomological Cabinet'. He also suggests that the projected third volume might not be financially viable.

Cat. Lib. BM(NH) Supplement, p. 1134; Horn & Schenkling 18822.

Condition

2 vols, 12mo, cont. half-calf, marbled edges and boards, rubbed/scuffed, wear to corners; raised bands to spine, gt tooling to compartments, gt lettering to black calf title-piece. Endpapers possibly later replacements. Some old worming affecting the joints causing some damage to the lower 5-6 cm (joints still firm), and to the endpapapers, with a few minor perforations extending to the margins of the first/last pages of each volume.

Occasional light foxing. Hand-coloured plates clean and crisp. Parts 1-24 (of 26), the final two parts formed the first issues of an abandoned 2nd series and are wanting in this set. A good set.
