Text Spanish. Biblioteca Americana 38. José de Acosta, (1540-1600) was a Spanish Jesuit, anthropologist and naturalist, who travelled in South America. His major work, 'Natural and moral history of the Indies' was published in Seville in 1590 and translated into English in 1604. In this work he noted the customs, rites and beliefs of the natives of Mexico and Peru and made important observations in the fields of biogeography and climatology.
