- Publisher : W. Thacker
- Illustrations : 38 photo-lithographs
Description:
Scarce. The work concerns grasses used for agricultural purposes in the southern portion of the Punjab. In the centre of the area, at Hissar, was a British Government cattle farm, where the finest Indian breeds were reared principally for the supply of the ordnance and transport departments. The Bir, or grass-lands, of this farm extended over sixty square miles, and it is mainly from this area that the grass species figured in this work by William Coldstream (d 1929), were taken. The grasses are shown life size, using colour photo lithography. Coldstream was employed by the Bengal Civil Service and was a member of the Royal Botanical Society of Edinburgh.
In the introduction to this work, Professor Robert Wallace (1853-1939), Professor of Agriculture and Rural Economy, Edinburgh University is referred to and extensively quoted a number times. Wallace travelled to India in 1887, and examined livestock farming and agriculture practice in India, publishing the monograph India in 1887, (1888).
