He was born in Perthshire, Scotland, and at the age of 21 joined the Forfar and Kincardine Militia, rising to the rank of captain in 1811. In 1840 he became curator of the Manchester Natural History Society’s Museum. He wrote a number of books on conchology and other natural history, which he illustrated himself.

Condition
4to, orig. brown cloth, neatly rebacked preserving original backstrip and paper title-label, the latter slightly chipped and soiled, some wear to corners. Lacks half-title. Some foxing to endpapers and a few of the plates. Plates VIII & IX incorrectly numbered II & III and corrected in manuscript; these and two further plates printed on a thinner stock, slightly smaller in height - these four plates are more heavily foxed. A few pencil annotations to text; small tick marks against the figures on some plates. Very good copy.
