Presents the theory of evolution through natural selection devoloped by the British naturalist Alfred Russel Wallace from a decade of observations (1848-58) in the New and Old World tropics. His theory was published before Darwin's Origin of Species (1859), yet the name Alfred Russel Wallace is almost unknown today. This book presents the major portion of Wallace's theory as originally elaborated in several scientific papers, and identifies from Wallace's other scientific contributions those observations basic to his evolutionary insighs. Much of Wallace's original text is reproduced for the reader.
