First edition. With an appendix on the Flora of Liberia by Otto Stapf. Colour illustrations by the author; botanical illustrations by Miss Matilda Smith; black and white illustrations from the author's drawings, and from photographs by the author and others. Vol. I includes chapters on the history, commerce, geography, climate and geology of Liberia; Vol. II on the flora, fauna, anthropology, folklore and languages. Harry Johnston (1858–1927) was a British explorer, botanist and colonial administrator.
Condition
2 vols, roy. 8vo, orig. maroon cloth, rubbed/minor wear to head/foot of spines, Liberia's coat of arms and motto ('The Love of Liberty Brought us Here') stamped in gt to front boards, teg, pictorial endpapers. Minor bump to foot of one spine. Folding maps with some foxing, three of them with a tear to inner blank margin (neatly repaired). A very good set.
