First edition. Charles New (1840-1875) was a Methodist minister and missionary, who in August 1871 became the first European to reach the snow line of Mount Kilimanjaro. He was a vocal opponent of the slave trade. New provided geographical insights about eastern Kenya and the region around Mount Kilimanjaro.

8vo, half calf, extremities rubbed, raised bands and gt rules to spine, leather title-piece (possibly later replacement), marbled boards and endpapers. Light browning, occasional spotting/light soiling; 2 plates torn, neatly repaired, one laid down. Faint ghost of an ink stamp to title. Armorial bookplate of William Agnew.
