First separate edition. (Appeared first in Trans. Zool. Soc. London, Jan. 1863.) Beautifully illustrated monograph with fine lithographic plates after J. Wolf and J. Erxleben. Richard Owen (1804-1892), English biologist, comparative anatomist and palaeontologist. He was an outspoken critic of Charles Darwin's theory of evolution by natural selection.

4to, cont. green cloth, rebacked with original spine retained, gt title to spine. Some foxing to text and plates. Very good.
Inscription in Owen's hand to verso of front endpaper, 'Sir Richard R. Vyvyan, Bart. With the Author's best regards.' Vyvyan (1800-1879) was a Tory politician and Fellow if the Royal Society. He was an advocate of Lamarckian evolution and the transmutation of species.
