Description:

John Gabriel Stedman (1744-1797) was a Scottish soldier and adventurer, who fought against rebel slaves in Suriname, had a romance with the slave Joanna and wrote one of the most important books about a slave society. This edition benefits from a major introduction, notes and appendixes by Richard and Sally Price. The text is based on Stedman’s personal copy of the 1790 manuscript rather than the heavily edited first edition of 1796.
