Reprint, limited to 225 numbered copies (this work was first published in three parts, 1903-1904). With an appreciation and introductory preface by K.G.V. Smith. An autobiographical record of the life of Carl Robert Osten-Sacken (1828-1906) a Russian diplomat and entomologist. He lived in the United States from 1856 to 1877, serving as the Russian consul general in New York City during the American Civil War. He studied the taxonomy of Diptera and in particular the Tipulidae. In the preface to this work, K.G.V Smith states ‘Osten Sacken may well be called the Father of American Dipterology’.
