Description:

Second volume of a projected series of 6 volumes on Hymenoptera of Europe. This book deals with the Sawflies (Symphyta) of Europe and North Africa, which represents just over 1400 species, spread among 13 families and 180 genera, in the classification used here. Their identification by means of dichotomous keys is made easier by 196 plates inserted in the text with 2250 drawings that illustrate the external morphological characters utilized in the keys, and especially the genitalia which are essential for identifying species of certain genera. Along with these drawings, the book features 78 plates with photos presenting 850 shots of larvae and imagos in their natural environment or as mounted specimens. Together they give an overall picture of the incredible diversity of Sawflies. For each species, information is given on their host plants, its global geographical distribution and its size, major synonyms are provided. Two new species are described: Dolerus pyrenaeus Lacourt & Noblecourt, n.sp., and Monophadnus taegeri Lacourt & Noblecourt n. sp.
