Description:

One of only 30 numbered copies (this copy #12) printed on Japanese paper, complete with the autograph signature of Fabre to a blank sheet bound at the front of the first volume. The eleventh volume, 'La Vie de J.-H. Fabre' by G.-V. Legros.

Jean-Henri Fabre (1823-1915) was a French naturalist, entomologist, and author. He is best known for his observations of living insects and is considered by many to be the father of modern entomology. Fabre combines what he calls 'my passion for scientific truth' with accurate observations and an engaging style of writing, which has contributed to the lasting popularity of his work. His 'Souvenirs Entomologiques' is a series of texts on insects and arachnids, which first began publication in 1879. Fabre sent a copy of his first volume to Charles Darwin, who called Fabre 'an inimitable observer'. Fabre, however, remained sceptical about Darwin's theory of evolution.
