Description:

First English edition. Based on Hellwald's 'Die Erde und ihre Völker'. With Ethnological Appendix by A.H. Keane. Edited and extended by A.R. Wallace: 'The present volume differs somewhat from the rest of this series of works, in consisting almost wholly of new matter. […] The paucity of available material has rendered it necessary for the volume to be practically rewritten, and I have thus been enabled to make it as complete a "Compendium" of the geography of Australasia as was possible within the prescribed limits.' (From the Preface)

Condition

8vo, recased in orig. dec. black- and gilt-stamped cloth, slight rubbing to extremities; expert repair to top of spine. Small marginal stain to frontis; tear to inner edge and along part of fold on one map; minor fraying/soiling to outer margin of one folding plate; a few small tears/nicks to a couple of other folding maps; some scattered foxing. Vg. From the library of English novelist and philanthropist, Walter Besant (1836-1901) with his book-plate to front pastedown.
