Description:

First English edition. Based on Hellwald's 'Die Erde und ihre Völker'. With Ethnological Appendix by A.H. Keane. Edited and extended by A.R. Wallace.

'The present volume differs somewhat from the rest of this series of works, in consisting almost wholly of new matter. […] The paucity of available material has rendered it necessary for the volume to be practically rewritten, and I have thus been enabled to make it as complete a "Compendium" of the geography of Australasia as was possible within the prescribed limits.' (From the Preface)

Condition

8vo, orig. dec. cloth, minor wear, small tear to top of spine. Front inner hinge cracked but firm; small stain to foot of frontis; one folding map with tear to inner edge and along part of one fold, another with some minor fraying/soiling to outer margin. From the library of English novelist and philanthropist, Walter Besant (1836-1901) with his book-plate to front pastedown.
