Description:
'Containing 226 figures. Illustrating the various Orders.' Engraved by J.W. Lowry. Each of the four plates (c. 245 x 660 mm) comprises four panels, hinged with linen. Joseph Wilson Lowry (1803-1879) was a London engraver with an interest in natural sciences. As an engraver he devoted himself wholly to scientific subjects, and became one of the ablest illustrators of works of that class. He produced a series of 11 sets of engravings of natural history subjects in the 'Tabular Views...' series, first published by the Society for the Promotion of Christian Knowledge, and later, under the series title, 'Diagrams of Natural History' by Edward Stanford. 'These Diagrams ... are drawn with the strictest regard to Nature ...each arranged so that it may be mounted in one sheet, or be divided into four sections and folded in the form of a book, thus rendering them available either for Class Exercises or Individual Study. The Price of each, Folded in Book Form, 4s.; or Mounted on Roller and Varnished, 6s.' (- printed inside rear cover.). The Insect set was first published by S.P.C.K. in 1857, and by Stanford in the 1860s.
