The preface states that the aim of the work was to ‘comprise detailed descriptions of every genus and species known to occur within the limits of India, British Burma and Ceylon; and short descriptions will be added in smaller type of species from neighbouring countries on the border, such as Malacca, Siam, Yuman, Thibet, South Turkestan, Afghanistan and Beluchistan.’

3 vols, roy. 8vo, orig cloth, Vol. 1: frontispiece loose, binding cracked; Vol. 2 spine torn; Vol. 3 spine torn, defective, with loss, shaken, lacks text pages 121-128 (with duplicate of pp. 483-490 bound in their place), caption to plate 29 in typescript (there is an error in pagination with page numbers 369/370 missing from the sequence, but signatures collate complete, as in all copies). Some occasional marginal markings and annotations where the text refers to the Andaman or Nicobar Islands. A working set. From the library of Michael Lloyd Ferrar (1876-1971), army officer, civil servant serving in India, and British commissioner of the penal settlement on the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, 1921-1933. A keen lepidoperist his collection of 4,000 butterflies from India and the Anadaman Islands is now deposited in the Natural History Museum, London.
