Description:

This book is the first ever written on the butterflies of the Canary Islands as an integrated whole, and it examines in considerable detail and depth the butterfly species to be found in this fascinating archipelago lying offshore to northwest Africa. It considers the subject matter in considerable depth, and it presents in one volume an exhaustive study that is a timely analysis of the butterfly fauna of this astonishing bioloigcal island laboratory. The Canary islands are extremely rich in endemic plants and animals, and the butterfly fauna is no exception to this. Furthermore, for some species island-specific sub-species and forms have evolved, with the Hipparchia grayling butterflies of the archipelago perhaps the pre-eminent example of this phenomenon. Each species of butterfly is studied in depth to reveal the large body of scientific work that has been undertaken in universities, museums and other institutions, and which covers issues such as speciation, endemicity, phenotypic plasticity, territoriality, wing patterning and reflectance, parasitism, oviposiotion, larval and pupal exigencies, migration, colonisation, ecological and guild association, and much much more. The role of Ghost Islands in the development of the Canary Island butterfly fauna is discussed for the first time ever, while extinctions and possible future new arrivals are also addressed.

In addition to detailed species-specific profiles, chapters of this ground-breaking book examine island geology, climate, vegetation biotopes, man's modification of the natural environment, environmental protection and conservation, the history of butterfly collecting, study and observation in the archipelago and butterfly biogeography. Final sections detail more than 100 sites within the Canary Islands to see and photograph butterflies, and present a very substantial and exhaustive bibliography and further reading list for anyone seriously interested in the butterflies of the Canary Islands. The very full text is complented by several dozen maps and a wealth of stunning photographs of butterfly species in various life stages, their habitats and the landscapes in which they dwell. This volume forms part of a series on the butterflies of each part of Macaronesia, which in turn is part of a planned series of over 100 detailed scientific volumes examining the butterfly faunas of every part of Europe.
