Description:

Fifth edition, enlarged. A new chapter on the 'Sound of Mull' has been added, as well as an autobiographical preface, 'Recollections of my Early Life'. John Colquhoun (1805-1885), writer on sport. The author was always a keen sportsman and an accurate observer of nature; but in his sympathy for the Scottish highlands' wilder days and for the preservation of endangered fauna, he confessed to 'having sunk the sportsman in the “amateur naturalist”' - Preface (3rd edn, 1851).

Condition

2 vols, 8vo, orig. cloth, worn/stained, recased with new endpapers. Some foxing and marginal staining, particularly to prelims of Vol. I and to the second half of Vol. II; old water stain to some plates. One frontis creased and slightly frayed at margins, the other with a short tear to outer margin.
