Description:

Complete set of all 10 volumes. The publishers stated that the aim of The Regional Naturalist series was to introduce both visitors and residents to 'the wildlife normally to be seen in each area covered. The ecological parts of each region are defined, and its fauna and flora are discussed as a community. The distribution of local plants and animals, and any special problems or features such as migration routes or unusual breeders are described.'

The first to be published in the unnumbered monographic series was The Naturalist in Wales, 1970. This proved to be one of the most popular titles in the series, written by the highly respected Welsh ornithologist and naturalist Ronald Mathias Lockley (1903-2000). This volume set the bench mark for the series, and included photographs by Eric Hosking and two line drawings by the celebrated artist Charles Frederick Tunnicliffe. The second in the series was, The Naturalist in Devon and Cornwall, by Roger Burrows, 1971, followed by The Naturalist in the Isle of Man, by the only female author in the series, Larch Sylvia Garrad, who was an Assistant Keeper at the Manx Museum.

Reflecting the growing popularity for foreign holidays the next volume was the only volume in the series which explored a country beyond Great Britain, The Naturalist in Majorca, by James D. Parrack, 1973. This pioneering work was ‘the first account of Majorca’s natural history for many years' and was favourably reviewed in Scottish Birds, Vol 7(8) as 'a most valuable work, and perhaps it is not too much to hope that it might be the forerunner of other such books on European areas'. Returning to British themes the next two volumes published in 1973 were The Naturalist in Lakeland by Eric Hardy (1912-2002) and The Naturalist in Central Southern England by Derrick Knowlton. In 1974 two volumes were published, The Naturalist in London by the conservationist John A. Burton, and The Naturalist in South-East England, by S.A. Manning. The final two volumes in the series by Derrick Knowlton were The Naturalist in Scotland, 1974 and The Naturalist in Hebrides, 1977.
