Description:

2nd edition. Illustrations by F. Barnard, A. Corbould, F. Dadd, W.L. Jones, W.E. Lapworth, W.H. Overend, P. Skelton, E. Wagner, E. Wilson, Joseph Wolf, and others, engraved on wood by Edward Whymper. Whymper (1840-1911) was an English mountaineer, explorer, illustrator, and author best known for the first ascent of the Matterhorn in 1865. He traveled to Ecuador with mountaineers J.A. Carrel and Louis Carrel to investigate altitude sickness during ascents of several mountains in the Andes. During the expedition they also collected 8000 zoological and botanical specimens. A second supplementary volume including the scientific observations was also published, but is not present here.

Condition

8vo in 4s, orig. olive-green cloth, bevelled boards, gt, dec. border to top and bottom edges of boards, gt to front board, continued on spine, blind stamped to rear board. Some rubbing/very minor wear to extremities. Short tear to fold of one map, browning to verso of map in rear pocket. Owners' names to fly leaf, one scored through. Bright, clean and well preserved copy. Vg.
