First English edition. Translated from the German by William Desborough Cooley. Adolph Erman (1806-1877) was a German physicist and explorer who embarked on a circumnavigation attempt in 1828. He published the account of his travels in Berlin from 1833 to 1842.

William Cooley translated the Siberian portion of Erman's travels, which include finding the existence of a Siberian magnetic pole.

Condition

2 vols, 8vo, rebound in recent quarter calf, marbled boards. Paper brittle along the hinge of the preliminary leaves. Some marginal browning. Occasional dust soiling. Vol. I: half-title neatly re-attached with archival tissue; title-page with chip to the fore-edge, and blind stamp of the subscription library, Young Men’s Mercantile Library of Cincinnati ; folding map with some tears, backed with archival tissue. Vol. II: half-title and title neatly re-attached at inner hinge; two Contents leaves detached.
