Description:

Text English, Italian and German. A 19th-century sammelband containing 19 papers on the world diatoms, extracted from various international journals and bound together in a single volume, 1859–1895.

Provenance: From the library of the Royal Microscopical Society (RMS), with their institutional ink stamps. Bound for the Society in original cloth (now somewhat worn), with the gilt spine title: Botanical Papers VI, Diatoms.

An exceptional specialist volume capturing the "Golden Age of Microscopy". The collection includes papers by international pioneers in the study of diatoms, including Per Teodor Cleve (1840-1905) the father of modern diatom taxonomy, Albert Grunow (1826-1914) and Francesco Castracane (1817-1899), alongside landmark physiological contributions by Theodor Wilhelm Engelmann (1843-1909) and Robert Lauterborn (1869-1952). Highlights include:

Global Biogeography & Expeditionary Science: Includes early papers charting micro-flora across extreme environments, including P.T. Cleve’s scarce dual works on diatoms from the Arctic Sea and the Sea of Java (1873), Astrid Cleve’s Swedish Lapland survey (1895), and L.W. Bailey’s early South American study on the Para River (1861).

Early Marine Ecology & Food Web Analysis: Includes Castracane’s seminal 1875 Mediterranean study utilizing the stomach contents of a pelagic tunicateSalpa pinnata to identify marine diatoms, alongside De-Toni’s 1888 analysis of Adriatic stingray digestive tracts.

Cytological & Mechanical Milestones: Contains Lauterborn’s paper on diatom cell and nuclear division (Ueber Bau und Kerntheilung..., 1893) and Engelmann’s treatise on the mechanics of protoplasmic movement and light stimuli (Ueber die Bewegungen..., 1880).

The Physics of Microscopy: Features Sullivant & Wormley’s important 1859 American Journal of Sciences paper, which used the microscopic striae of diatom frustules to benchmark and test the absolute resolving limits of 19th-century optical lenses.

Local & Environmental Surveys: Includes regional papers spanning the UK (Kitton's Norfolk, Comber's Liverpool, Norman's Hull), Central Europe (Schumann's Tatra Mountains, Grunow's 158-page Austrian catalogue), and early environmental microscopy, such as Dr. Bossey’s 1879 paper utilizing Thames mud for sanitary and pollution analysis.
