Description:

First edition. Scarce. Printed on one side of the page only with the verso of each leaf reserved for observations. A charming item. '… the first considerable attempt to syllable the songs and notes of birds ...' (Mullens & Swann). A review of this work published in Nature August 1898, noted humorously 'The correctness of many of the notes are self-apparent, but some are decidedly difficult of pronunciation by the uninitiated, and it is to be hoped that many of his readers are unfamiliar with the precise tone of “the snore of a drunken man,” which is given as one of the notes of the chaffinch.'

Mullens & Swann p. 291.
