Description:

2nd edition. Originally published in 16 parts 1846-1847. Many of the illustrations for the plates were drawn from nature by Mrs. Catharine Johnston, the author's wife. Plates are numbered I-LXXIV; XXXIV* (LXIV + LXV not published). A portrait of the author is found as a frontispiece in some copies sold after 1857, but is not found in the original part issues or early consolidated copies such as this one. (Williams, R.B. Condition

2 vols, demy 8vo, cont. full polished calf (some scuffing, lightly speckled), gilt and blind ruled border to both boards, with dec. gt motifs at corners, elaborate gt tooling to edges of boards, with gt inner dentelles, aeg, raised bands to spines, leather title pieces, marbled endpapers. Some offsetting from plates onto facing caption leaves. Armorial bookplate of Hanbury Barclay, with his heraldic emblems also in gilt to spines. A handsomely bound set.
