Mixed editions: Vol. I and III, first editions (1893), Vol. II, 8th edition (1925). The third volume contains the pattern plates with 144 dyed fabric swatches and is particularly scarce.
A review of this work published in Nature, 1893 stated that it was ‘a substantial contribution to an important branch of technology’ and that ‘that the subject is handled in a more scientific way than has hitherto been the case in such works’, noting that at this time ‘so little is known about the scientific relationship between a colouring-matter and the fabric which is dyed thereby’ and lamented that ‘the subject of dyeing has still to be taught as an art rather than as a science’.
Condition
