Based on papers presented at the symposium 'Tethys, an ancestral Mediterranean (The evolution of a biogeographic region)'. The Thetys ocean, named for the Greek Titan of Water, was an ocean that existed between the palaeocontinents of Laurasia and Gondwana during the Mesozoic and Cenozoic eras, opening up into the Indian and Pacific Oceans in the late Cretaceous.
