Description:
Text Spanish. Expanded 2nd Edition. This new, improved, and expanded edition includes 405 species of nocturnal butterflies. It encompasses more than 35 years of work and observations of Lepidoptera. It aims to provide an updated review of the species, genera, and families of Rhopalocera and a large part of the Heterocera of the Iberian Peninsula, and the Canary and Balearic Islands, all from a simple, highly visual, and educational perspective. It includes data, experiences, and photographs compiled by the author, taken in the wild or in his study, in a process that has lasted more than 10 years. This work began with a trip to La Rioja in August 2013, although it dates back to the 1990s with the collection of field data and personal observations.
This work represents the culmination of over 35 years of the author's personal observations and study of Lepidoptera. Many of the photographs of prepared specimens were made possible thanks to specimens deposited in his private collection and in the collections of some of the collaborators mentioned in the acknowledgements section - invaluable databases.
According to the latest taxonomic revisions and genetic studies, 257 species of diurnal butterflies currently fly in Spain, all of which are included in this book. Furthermore, all families of macroheterocera are described, including the most representative genera and species, with comparative plates.
The work, of course, does not attempt to encompass all species of nocturnal butterflies, which, given the format used, would be unthinkable and impossible to achieve. It discusses some common species within a specific genus, but not all the species that comprise it. However, the information included in the descriptions and fact sheets for each family provides a general overview of Spanish moths for a broader audience, as well as for many enthusiasts with more specific interests.
The text is straightforward, incorporating personal observations from the author and contributors, making the book a practical guide for reference and identification. Furthermore, its large format and numerous photographs, including both rhopalaceans and heterocerans in differentiation plates and prepared specimens, make it a key reference for those wishing to enter or delve deeper into the world of lepidopterology.
