Description:
Sixth impression (first published December 1940). A memoir of Eric Gill (1882-1940), English sculptor, engraver, and type designer best known for the typefaces Gill Sans and Perpetua.. The book was first published in 1940, shortly before his death. It includes memories of his childhood in Sussex, his conversion to Roman Catholicism, work as a stone carver and typographer, the craft communities he founded, his rejection of industrial modernity etc. The book is also controversial because Gill presents himself in a spiritually serious and morally reflective way while omitting the sexual abuse later revealed in his private diaries.
