Description:

Undated reissue by W.H. Allen with cancel title pages. These four volumes were first published as part of Jardine's Naturalist's Library (W.H. Lizars, 1838-1843). Pt 1: Birds of Prey (plates 1-34); Pt II: Incessores (plates 1-30); Pt III: Rasores and Grallatores (plates 1-34); Pt IV: Natatores (plates 1-30, 2*). Attractive hand-coloured bird portraits from drawings by J. Stewart. Each of the volumes contains a biography of an eminent naturalist: Sir Robert Sibbald (Pt I), William Smellie (Pt II), John Walker (Pt III), Alexander Wilson (Pt IV), each with an engraved portrait (but that for John Walker wanting in this set).

Condition

4 vols, small 8vo, orig. green cloth, black and gilt stamped dec to front boards, gilt titles to spines, rubbed to head/foot of spines, a few minor nicks. Without portrait frontispiece of John Walker to Vol. III (probably never bound in). Very occasional light foxing to text, plates clean. Vg.
