Description:
A vivid and perceptive account of travel through the vast inland regions of mid-twentieth-century Brazil by the journalist and author Kenneth Matthews. Written at a pivotal moment in the nation's development, the work records journeys beyond the familiar coastal cities into remote settlements, frontier districts, and sparsely populated landscapes then undergoing rapid social and economic change.
The second half of the book is devoted to a journey into the remote Xingu basin, the so-called "Fawcett country" where Colonel Percy Fawcett disappeared in 1925. Matthews provides a particularly engaging description of a lengthy river voyage by native canoe, together with accounts of his encounters with indigenous peoples, including members of the little-known Caiapó. Illustrated throughout with photographs taken by the author during his travels using a cine-camera.
A well-written and now uncommon travel narrative, offering a fascinating glimpse of Brazil's interior before the transformative development of the nation's central regions.
