Description:

Growing in some of the most barren and extreme habitats of our world, carnivorous plants are adapted to very specific environmental conditions which must be understood for their successful cultivation. Vol. 1 profiles the natural habitats and environmental requirements of each genus of carnivorous plants to provide horticulturists with a clear and focused understanding of the specific conditions which these remarkable plants require. By understanding the strange worlds in which these unusual and often spectacular plants naturally grow, horticulturists will be better equipped to successfully cultivate and study them.

Vol. 1 covers introductory chapters, chapters on the evolution, distribution and habitat of these plants, and genus accounts of the Snap Traps and Pitcher Plants, including Aldrovanda, Dionaea, Darlingtonia, Heliamphora, Sarracenia, Nepenthes, Cephalotus, Brocchinia and Catopsis.

Vol. 2 covers genus accounts of the Sticky-Leaved Insect Plants, Corkscrew Plants and Bladderworts, including Triphyophyllum, Drosera, Drosophyllum, Roridula, Byblis, Pinguicula, Ibicella, Proboscidea, Philcoxia, Genlisea, and Utricularia and concluding chapters.

This spectacular work includes hundreds of photographs of rare and little documented carnivorous plants in the wild.

The Appendix includes descriptions of the following new species: Nepenthes gantungensis, N. hamiguitanensis, N. holdenii and N. palawanensis, as well as a fascinating account of the rediscovery of N. thorelii.

Reprint, originally published in 2010.
