Description:
Vol. I text (1898), together with Supplement Vol. I text (1914) and the complete series of 41 chromolithographic plates to the Supplement (1915). Hampson's monumental systematic catalogue of the world's moths was published in 13 principal volumes (1898-1913), with two supplementary volumes (1914-1920). The present volumes form a coherent taxonomic section of this extensive work, comprising the original treatment of the Syntomidae, together with supplementary treatments of the Amatidae and Arctiadae (Nolinae and Lithosianae). The fine chromolithographic plates were drawn by Horace Knight and printed by West, Newman & Co. The plates were issued separately from the text and are uncommon, particularly preserved loose in their original printed wrappers. Plates to the original Vol. I are not included.
The systematic treatment reflects the classification employed by Hampson at the time of publication; these groups have since undergone considerable taxonomic revision, with most now placed within the Arctiinae (Erebidae), and the Nolinae within the Nolidae.
