A study of the behaviour and ecology of the mammals of Upemba National Park, produced as part of the major Mission G. F. de Witte (1946-1949), the Belgian scientific exploration of the Park in what is now the Democratic Republic of the Congo. The work is based on field observations made during the expedition and considers the habits, habitat, feeding and ecological relationships of the mammalian fauna, rather than treating the species solely from a taxonomic standpoint. Illustrated with excellent photographs taken by the author.

René Karel Verheyen (1907-1961) was a Belgian zoologist, ornithologist and mammalogist associated with the Royal Belgian Institute of Natural Sciences. He joined the scientific exploration of the Belgian Congo's national parks from 1947 and later became a specialist in vertebrate systematics, teaching zoology at Ghent University. His extensive field experience and particular interest in vertebrate behaviour give this work significance as an early contribution to African mammalogy and field ethology, as well as providing an important historical record of the fauna of Upemba National Park.
