Description:
Vol. IV includes parts III-V of the second monograph: III. Discophorae; IV. Hydroidae; V. Homologies of the Radiata. The lithographic plates (numbered XX-XXIII, XXIIIa, XXIV-XXXV) are by H.J. Clark, who was employed by Agassiz to assist in the preparation of this series. Agassiz appeared as sole author of the work although Clark had performed much of the microscopical research and was responsible for large proportions of the text on jellyfish. This resulted in a dispute between the two men in which Clark circulated a statement of his case in an attempt to be recognised as an author.
