Description:

Text French. With its coral reefs and transparent waters, the Caribbean is a tropical paradise, and for this reason, it is one of the favourite destinations for tourists.

These underwater landscapes, largely shaped by reef-building corals, are particularly threatened. In addition to natural phenomena such as hurricanes, coral reefs are victims of the degradation of coastal water quality, the imbalance of these ecosystems, which results in the proliferation of certain organisms, infectious agents, and so on. Finally, warming waters are causing coral bleaching.

The area covered by corals in the Caribbean has declined by 85% over the past 50 years.

This guide helps to identify 68 species of reef-building corals found in the Caribbean: the Scleractinians, as well as the main species of fire corals (Milleporidae) and lace corals (Stylasteridae) and their main morphological variations according to environmental conditions (ecomorphs or ecotypes), taking into account the most recent contributions of systematics.

This guide is aimed at divers and snorkelers, but also at marine biology enthusiasts and naturalists in the broadest sense.
