In recognition of the growing understanding of the medical importance of mosquitoes, the Museum trustees invited Theobald to publish a major work on the Culicidae. Benefitting from the administrative infrastructure of the British Empire, Medical Officers throughout the colonies were instructed to collect specimens for the project and to send them to the Museum in London. The resulting monumental publication, A monograph of the Culicidae, or mosquitoes: mainly compiled from the collections received at the British museum from various parts of the world in connection with the investigation into the cause of malaria conducted by the Colonial office and the Royal Society, was published, 1901-1910.
