Complete original four-part series, issued as Special Papers of the Palaeontological Society of Japan, nos. 39-42. An exceptionally extensive reference work recording the type specimens of Japanese fossils described principally during the twentieth century and deposited in Japanese institutions. The first three parts alone record approximately 14,900 fossil type specimens, covering plants and a very wide range of invertebrate and vertebrate groups. Entries provide the taxon and author, original bibliographical reference, type status and repository number, type locality, stratigraphic unit, geological age and relevant taxonomic remarks.
A supplementary Part 5, under different editorship, was published in 2016.
