Updated third edition. This work is the result of the third phase of the Mapping European Butterflies (MEB) project, begun in 1995. The first edition of Distribution Atlas of European Butterflies was published in 2002, based on approximately 250,000 records contributed by some 250 recorders throughout Europe. It was the first computer-assisted distribution atlas of the butterflies of an entire continent. The second phase (MEB-2) resulted in the publication of Distribution Atlas of Butterflies in Europe in 2011, based on approximately 650,000 records. The present work completes the third phase (MEB-3).

This substantially revised edition includes approximately 450 new distribution maps based on updated and revised data; rewritten and updated species accounts; detailed distribution tables for the Macaronesian Islands; new annotated synonymic checklists covering approximately 1,000 names; enlarged and rewritten chapters on taxonomy and zoogeography; an historical account of the first 20 years of the MEB project; and, for the first time, illustrations of many species, including some male genitalia.
