Description:

Text French. Gabriel-Auguste Daubrée, (1814- 1896, Paris) was a French geochemist and a pioneer in the application of experimental methods to the study of geological phenomena. On his death an obituary in ‘Nature’ described him as ‘One of the brightest lights in the geological department of French science’. In 1838 Daubrée was appointed professor of mineralogy and geology at the University of Strasbourg. In 1861 he was appointed professor of geology at the Museum of Natural Sciences, Paris and in 1862 professor at the Imperial School of Mines. He amassed a large collection of meteorites. Études synthétiques de géologie expérimentale is considered his most significant work. It consists of two parts, the first concerns experimental methods used to study various geological phenomena, the second part looks at the application of experimental methods to various cosmological phenomena, which includes investigations on the constitution and characteristics of meteorites. Daubrée’s mechanical rather than his chemical experiments were most influential, in particular, the production of joint patterns associated with folding and torsion proved a stimulus to the experimental studies of such geologists as Bailey Willis (1857-1949) and Ernse Cloos (1898-1974) and Hans Cloos (1885 -1951).
