Description:

[First Exercise Book for Written Arithmetic]. Text in Danish, printed in Gothic type. A mid-19th-century Danish school exercise book intended for teaching of written arithmetic (“skriftlig regning”). The work formed part of the wider Scandinavian movement toward mass literacy and numeracy that followed the Danish educational reforms of the early nineteenth century. The author, J. B. Sass, was associated with arithmetic instruction and practical pedagogy. A related German-language arithmetic teaching work by J. B. Sass appeared in the 1840s, The work was translated from German by two teachers at Sankt Petri Schule, Copenhagen, G.C. Appel and L.H. Nissen. This school had close links with Germany.
