Description:

Text Italian. Of all the macromycetes, the genus Cortinarius is by far the largest, counting a number of species estimated at no less than three thousand units worldwide. The taxonomy of these mushrooms is also considered by specialists to be a real mess, in which it is difficult to navigate. It is a fact that even for mycologists of considerable experience it is difficult to trace a part of the collections of cortinari not only to the species, but simply to the grouping they belong to.

The main monographic works available today dedicated to cortinari are characterized by a mass and a level of detail that is probably excessive for the beginner.

This publication therefore aims to meet the needs of the mycophile or naturalist who wants to approach the cortinaires: identify the species described and illustrated, or at least correctly frame the group they belong to; above all, take a first step in the knowledge of this fascinating genre. These objectives are pursued through dichotomous keys, complete descriptive cards and a rich and evocative iconography, the work of Riccardo Mazza, one of the best known and most talented Italian mushroom illustrators.

The infrageneric systematics adopted is deliberately anchored to tradition, for didactic purposes, but the treatment of the single species does not neglect the results of the most recent studies of a phylogenetic nature, which are promptly cited in the rich bibliography proposed.
