Gottlieb Wilhelm Bischoff (1797-1854) was professor of botany, and director of the Botanical Garden of Heidelberg; he was also an accomplished botanical illustrator. The work traces the historical development of botanical language, offers extensive discussions on botanical synonyms, and examines the evolution of plant classification systems. Several of Bischoff’s 4,000 illustrations became seminal, enduring in botanical textbooks for many years. The Handbuch is a valuable resource for both historical and systematic botanical studies, reflecting Bischoff’s dual expertise as a scientist and illustrator.

Condition

4 vols, 4to (255x200mm), recent blue buckram, gilt titles to spines. Some, mostly light foxing throughout, a few plates browned and more heavily foxed. Withdrawn from an institutional library with small, neat ink stamps to half-titles, titles, final leaves and verso of plates. A good set.
