Description:
First UK edition. Publisher's catalogue at rear dated December, 1874.
This book advanced the argument that scientific progress has historically met resistance from religious authority. Widely read and debated, it proved highly influential in shaping modern perceptions of the relationship between science and religion.
The author, John William Draper (1811-1882), was a prominent English polymath, scientist, physician, chemist, and historian. In his youth, his family emigrated to Virginia in the United States. He later became Professor of Chemistry and Botany at New York University and played a key role in founding its medical school, where he served as both professor and, subsequently, president. Draper was also a pioneer in photography, producing some of the earliest portrait photographs (1839-40) and among the first detailed images of the moon (1840).
